There are moments when life feels demanding, uncertain, or overwhelming. During these times, we may believe we need to solve everything immediately. Yet sustainable strength often begins with something simpler: pausing, breathing, and taking one meaningful step at a time.

For Strength September, WellSpring7DAYSLivingLifeWELL invites us to explore strength in the body, mind, and spirit. Our weekly theme is STAMINA, and today’s focus—Wellness Wednesday—reminds us that stamina is not about forcing ourselves to keep going without rest. It is the ability to move forward with awareness, balance, recovery, and hope.

The four words—Breathe. Believe. Begin. Become.—offer a simple framework for building wellness, wellbeing, and resiliency.

    Breathe: Return to the Present

Breathing is more than an automatic function; it can become an anchor during stressful moments. A slow, gentle breath with a slightly longer exhale may help signal safety to the body and create space between a stressful experience and our response.

When we pause to breathe, we give ourselves permission to slow down and notice what is happening within us. We may not be able to control every circumstance, but we can begin by reconnecting with the present moment.

Try this: Inhale gently for four counts and exhale slowly for six counts. Repeat five times, allowing your shoulders and jaw to soften.

    Believe: Recognize Your Inner Strength

Belief does not mean pretending that everything is easy. It means recognizing that difficulty does not erase our capacity to cope, learn, seek support, and continue growing.

You may be tired and still be strong. You may feel uncertain and still take a wise next step. You may need help and still be resilient. Believing in yourself can begin with a compassionate statement such as, “I can face this moment one step at a time.”

    Begin: Take One Manageable Step

When we feel overwhelmed, a large goal can seem impossible. Beginning with one small action makes progress feel more accessible and helps transform intention into movement.

Your first step might be drinking water, taking a short walk, stretching, organizing one task, contacting a supportive person, or setting aside a few minutes for rest. Small actions, repeated consistently, can support physical health, emotional balance, and lasting stamina.

Ask yourself: What is one helpful thing I can do today?

    Become: Grow Through the Process

Becoming is not about reaching perfection. It is the ongoing process of developing greater self-awareness, courage, balance, and resilience.

Every time you regulate your breathing, respond with intention, honor your limits, or choose a healthy action, you are becoming more connected to the person you want to be. Growth may be gradual, but gradual growth is still growth.

You are not required to have everything figured out today. You are invited to keep learning, healing, and becoming—one day and one choice at a time.

    Strength and Nervous System Regulation

Our nervous system influences how we experience stress, energy, focus, emotions, and connection. When the body remains in a prolonged state of stress, it can become more difficult to rest, think clearly, manage emotions, and sustain healthy habits.

Regulation practices—such as mindful breathing, gentle movement, adequate rest, supportive relationships, and grounding exercises—can help us return to greater balance. These practices do not eliminate life’s challenges, but they may strengthen our ability to meet those challenges with clarity and resilience.

    A Wellness Wednesday Practice

    Set aside five minutes today:

    • Breathe: Practice five rounds of extended-exhale breathing.
    • Notice: Identify what your body and mind need right now.
    • Begin: Choose one small action that supports your wellbeing.
    • Believe: Repeat, “I can take the next step with patience and courage.”
    • Become: Reflect on how this choice reflects the person you are becoming.

    A Message of Hope

You do not have to overcome everything at once. Pause, breathe, and take the next clear step. Your strength is growing, your path is unfolding, and hope can continue to guide you forward.

    Breathe. Believe. Begin. Become.
